Partnership and co-production with learners and parents/carers
Participation and engagement with young people and carers in decision making is essential. Building positive relationships with families and pupils, listening to the pupil voice and collaborating can support a sense of belonging and underpin a fully inclusive experience.
Positive and trusted alliances with parents/carers are essential for building on embedded approaches to collaboration and co-production. Improved partnerships increase the positive perceptions of the schools, support practitioners in understanding what is important to families and create a sense of community belonging.
In February 2025, Young People at Somers Town Youth Centre provided ways in which teachers have supported their sense of belonging. Some of the feedback included:
- Teaching staff who get to know a pupil’s interests and build it into activities
- Having group activities with friends
- Teaching staff who take time to check-in with pupils around how they are feeling
- Having an opportunity to engage with new creative experiences – eg. woodwork, cooking, art.
- Pupils being provided with work experience opportunities
- Teaching staff who discuss the future with pupils

Whole Setting Approaches:
- CYP actively participate in their own 'assess, plan, do, review process (graduated approach). The CYP is prepared for the meeting and appropriately supported in the meeting to share their views.
- Person centred approaches are routinely used to evaluate and inform support and planning.
- CYP are helped to understand their own barriers to learning and the strategies that can support them
